Participants Needed: [CAERDA] IES Data Training Workshops in January 2009

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER) at the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), U.S. Department of Education are sponsoring three data training workshops in January 2009. The training workshops are held in Washington, DC. Applicants who are interested in attending these workshops should apply before the November deadlines (see below).

There is no fee to attend these workshops. IES will provide training materials as well as computers for the hands-on practice. IES also will pay for transportation, hotel accommodations, and a fixed per diem for meals and incidental expenses during the training seminar.

1. Using the ECLS-B Database for Research and Policy Discussion (ECLS-B Database Training) (NCES)

Description: The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education, will sponsor a 3-day advanced studies seminar on the use of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort (ECLS-B) database. The ECLS-B is designed to support research on a wide range of topics pertaining to young children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development and their health status across multiple contexts (e.g., home, child care, and kindergarten).

The Chinese American Educational Research and Development Association (CAERDA) warmly extends the invitation to solicit proposals for presentations at its 2009 International Conference on April 12-13, 2009 in San Diego, California, U.S.A. This annual event, held in conjunction with the American Educational Research Association (AERA), provides an exciting opportunity for educators, researchers, and policy makers from around the world to engage in scholarly exchange and invigorating dialogue on issues related to educational excellence and equity, particularly among Chinese and Chinese Americans.

The theme for the 2009 CAERDA Conference is “Educational Technology: Enhancing Teaching and Learning with Technology in the 21st Century.” Technology has redefined our educational processes and social structure. To better prepare students to meet the demands of this technologically advanced era, teachers and educators alike must consider the role of technology in facilitating learning and fostering cross-cultural understanding. While technology has been used in diverse learning environments and disciplinary areas to enhance instruction, more efforts are needed to understand a range of issues from the integration of new technologies to the assessment of their effectiveness. At this conference, we are particularly interested in research related to (a) the use of educational technology with the focus on Chinese or Chinese American students, and the Chinese culture or language; and (b) international studies that compare educational technology usage across different cultural, linguistic, ethnic, or socioeconomic backgrounds (e.g., comparing students and schools in the U.S. with those in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong). Within this broad conference theme, the conference will focus on the following sub-themes:

Sub-theme 1: Enhancing teaching and learning through the use of technology (e.g., digital story, automated reading tutor, using computers in Chinese language instruction);

Sub-theme 2: Assessing the effects of using technology for instruction and learning (e.g., assessment of technology accessibility, assessment of student academic achievement or social competence, evaluation of educational computer software);

Sub-theme 3: Promoting effective technology use in distance or online learning (e.g., e-learning in foreign language, online AP courses in rural schools); and

Sub-theme 4: Examining policies and other issues related to educational technology beyond the classroom (e.g., digital divide, technological infrastructure, computer security, Internet safety for children).


In keeping with the CAERDA conference tradition, we also welcome studies on other areas of research and practice that may not directly relate to the conference theme but contribute to the understanding of important educational issues in the 21st century.

活動相關事項

一、參與補助
參與同學援例補助午餐＄5（簡單三明治啦！）
對於距離芝加哥160英哩以上學校，如普渡、香檳、愛荷華、俄亥俄、威斯康辛等，將酌予每車（一車5人計）50美元補助交通。確認參加人數後，會再核定。

二、學校牌示
為突顯參與學校的特性，各校同學可自行設計、製作校名舉牌，原則上上排為中文校名，下排為英文校名（供現場司儀唱名），可以加入校徽或自由創作各種裝飾。若得以在遊行隊伍中亮相，文化組將補助每校製作成本＄20美元。

三、口號或表演
為響應遊行宗旨、呼應國家慶典的喜氣，由各校自行準備簡短的口號、歌曲或其他演出。可於隊伍行進中由各校輪流展演，一則帶動現場氣氛，一則為同學聯誼。
請於10月3日以前完成受理報名，因為要以以學校為單位， 所以麻煩想參加的同學跟該校學生會通知!!! 更重要的是，掌旗官32名，將引導遊行隊伍，需帥哥美女踴躍參與，名額有限，請儘早登記，以免向隅。

Faculty Positions Available for Application

The Department of Psychology at National Cheng Kung University, Tainan city, Taiwan, invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate professor. Appointment at a higher level may be considered only in conjunction with the chairship. Salary is commensurate with rank and experience, and is determined according to a government regulated scale. The preferred areas of research are experimental/cognitive, biological/physiological, developmental, social/industrial, and quantitative. The main selection criterion is distinction in research and flexibility in teaching.

The Department includes an undergraduate program in psychology as well a master's program in cognitive science, which emphasizes both theoretical and applied cognitive research. The Department emphasizes teaching of basic psychological knowledge and training of research skills. Many of the courses are taught in English or require readings in English. Excellent computing and research facilities support the teaching and research in the Department.

西北大學台灣校友 將首次舉辦在台校友聚會

（中央社記者黃旭昇台北縣二十一日電）包括前財政部長呂桔誠、台北市政府研考會主委盛治仁在內的美國西北大學台灣校友會籌備委員會，計畫於九月十四日中秋節前夕，首度在台灣舉辦校友聚會。由於校友散居台灣各地，無法掌握在台校友名單，台灣學生會希望西北校友主動聯繫。

西北大學台灣學生會會長鄭雅慈表示，為了增進校友交流，西北大學台灣學生會（Northwestern ROCSA）計畫首度將在九月十四日（星期日）下午，在台灣台北舉辦校友茶敘。

除了呂桔誠、盛治仁，籌備委員還包括中央研究院資訊科學研究所研究員廖弘源。

鄭雅慈說，目前已知畢業於美國西北大學的台灣校友還包括，交通大學前校長郭南宏、東海大學校長程海東教授、國立成功大學環境工程學系教授朱信、大漢技術學院機械工程學系副教授游象正、文化大學藝術研究所副教授樊慰慈等。

另外，還有台北醫學大學牙醫學系專任教授李勝揚、北醫專任教授呂炫（方方土）、兼任副教授董德瑞、兼任助理教授丘建華等人。

What is COMEMUN?

COMEMUN stands for “Cultural-oriented Multiple Exchange of Model United Nations.” The COMEMUN project will take place from 20 July to 27 July, 2008 at National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan. On behalf of National Taiwan University (NTU), we sincerely invite students from universities around the globe to attend the COMEMUN project. All activity costs are covered by the host team.

Activities

We will be holding a Model UN conference with two committees and five sessions. Pre-conference sessions on Rules of Procedure are especially designed for MUN first-timers. Cultural activities include Taiwan Yes!, MRT Taipei city tour, day trip to northern Taiwan, Chinese wedding experience project and a farewell party. For more information, please visit our website.

搖滾樂團表演ROCKAPPELLA 2008

Treblemakers 是一個以亞洲學生為主的重唱團，表演來自台灣、中國、日本和美國的流行歌曲。
他們也曾經在今年的ROCSA/CSSA中國新年活動參與表演。
Morphin 也是一個以亞洲為主的搖滾樂團，表演來自台灣和日本的搖滾歌曲。
Rockapella 則是一年一度Treblemakers和Morphin一起舉辦的大型表演。

巴洛克獨奏家樂團 創立於2004 年，團員以國立中山大學（台灣 高雄）音樂系專任、兼任教師，以及研究所優秀畢業學生為主；於2006年正式成為中山大學駐校樂團。目前樂團人員共有十五人，包括指揮一人，大鍵琴一人，弦樂十三人，並且不定期邀請聲音家、管樂獨奏家、以及優秀的在校生做客座演出。

巴洛克獨奏家樂團 的目標為﹕(一)積極推廣巴洛克時期與古典早期音樂，(二)發展教師專業演奏能力，(三)培育音樂菁英學子。

此外，鑒于近年來台灣的年輕人對台灣音樂的接觸日漸減少，巴洛克獨奏家樂團 亦致力於將台灣民謠加以改編，繁複多變、更迭出現的旋律 以弦樂重奏方式演出，使得不論是深沉動人、或是青春活潑的曲調，都聽來更覺清新可喜，令人回味，從而引起更多人對台灣歌謠及音樂的喜愛與珍惜。

當巴洛克獨奏家樂團讓 巴洛克時期音樂、與 台灣本土文化 相遇的結果，產生了2006年的「璀燦西灣—當西方巴洛克遇上台灣民謠」音樂專輯，它獲選入誠品世界音樂類年度推薦前十名，並於2007年入圍台灣「第十八屆金曲獎跨界音樂專輯」。

此場表演曲目特別安排 馬克  歐康納 的《阿帕拉契華爾滋》等美國當代作曲家作品，以及包括白鷺鷥、六月茉莉，搖嬰仔等台灣民謠改編曲。芝城台灣社區教會聖歌隊、芝加哥褔爾摩沙女聲合唱團、黎音合唱團 亦將在音樂會中演唱台語詩歌。誠邀 鄉親們 偕同 親朋好友， 一齊來聆賞這場 在早春 由 巴洛克獨奏家樂團帶來的音樂會。

台灣學生筱玫編導的文革舞台劇西北校園登場！"Enemies of the People" Adapted & Directed by Hsiao-Mei

就讀於本校表演研究所博五的謝筱玫同學將要舉辦由她擔綱編導的舞台劇"Enemies of the People"囉～
熱烈歡迎有興趣的同學們呼朋引伴前往欣賞，看看西北校園中難得出現的以華人文化歷史為主題的戲劇製作！

(實驗劇場規模。在 Theater and Interpretation Center 的建築裡。
1949 Campus Drive。在Norris Center旁邊。入口 跟 Norris Center大門是朝同一方向)

演出內容與特色：
雖然是以文革為題材，但是筱玫想訴求比較人性層面的東西，所以演員並沒有華人。全是西北的戲劇系與表演所學生。所以，來看看美國人如何詮釋中國異文化題材，以及台灣人如何詮釋中國題材，很有意思的喔。

舞台設計也很酷，是前西北校友 Dora 的老公Carl Johnson設計的，他在西北教布景繪製，也在台大客座過。舞台將出現一大幅毛澤東的畫像, and...

演出全長一個小時。

What: ITASA stands for Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Student Association, basically, for a weekend, you'll get to meet other Taiwanese Americans from schools in the vicinity and attend workshops to learn more about Asians in the society (especially in the US) and their industries, and whanot. For those of you who's never been to one of these, it's a great networking event and you'll meet tons of people and most importantly, have fun.
When: 4/4 - 4/6 (Friday - Sunday) starting at 8am for registration
Where: Evanston campus (mainly in Norris Center)
Damage: $30/person
This event is VERY VERY fun!! Great for meeting new people!!

First, thanks to everyone who came to the hotpot dinner for the new Rat year! For those who did not get the red envelopes, don't be discouraged! Best of luck this year. For those who got the envelopes, hopefully you'll have the same luck every year!

Here, we would like to apologize for not informing you that you needed to find your own transportation, causing many's inconvenience. ROCSA apologizes for this confusion, we'll be sure to make it clearer in the future.

Once again, ROCSA would like to wish everyone a very happy Rat year! Doesn't matter if you attended the hotpot dinner or not, ROCSA will always care about you and hope that you will feel the warmth of family even though you're so far away from home.

舊的一年即將結束，迎接鼠年的到來，在歲末年終的此刻，芝加哥的氣溫即將驟降，不如來參加暖呼呼的學生會除夕圍爐活動吧！

• 時間：2/1(週五) 晚間六點半
• 地點：老四川麻辣火鍋店吃到飽 (2172A S. Archer Ave., Chicago, IL 60616)
• 費用：學生會會員一人15塊；非會員或是會員家眷一人20塊

有鑑於人數統計困難，因此本次活動採預先收費，還請大家多多見諒

• 報名截止日：1/18(週五)前
• 繳費截止日：1/25(週五)前，非芝加哥校區同學可以支票到1915 Maple Ave, apt#815, Evanston, IL 60201，支票抬頭Yu-chieh Mai
  

附註：老四川吃到飽外加飲料小費和稅，一人為30塊美金左右。舉辦圍爐活動，就是希望大家在異鄉也能有家鄉味，因此，學生會補助一半經費，經過計算後，一人為15塊。

As we welcome the new "Rat" year, and as Chicago's weather becomes increasingly colder, come join the rest of the ROCSA members for a warm and fun hotpot dinner!

• Fee: ROCSA member - $15; Non-member - $20
  (Due to reservation purposes, we need to collect fees before this event. Thank you for your understanding.)

• Registration deadline: prior to 1/18 (Friday)
• Payment deadline: prior to 1/25 (Friday); Chicago campus students can mail their checks to Yu-Chieh Mai(1915 Maple Ave., Apt. 815, Evanston, IL 60201)

*Note: Old Sichuan charges $30/person including drinks, taxes and tips. ROCSA is sponsoring half of this amount, so the members only have to pay $15 (non-members $20). The main purpose of the event is to make everyone feel right at home during this time.
